Shakespearean Performance
Shakespeare was a master storyteller. His plays are full of extraordinary and unique comic and tragic characters, intriguing stories and plot twists, heartbreaking and hilarious dramatic moments… and yet the thought of performing Shakespeare fills many actors with terror!
This practical course is designed to make Shakespeare accessible to a modern performer and a modern audience in a workshop environment which is supportive, energetic and fun.
Using a range of Shakespearean texts the course will explore the vocal, physical and emotional skills needed to perform Shakespeare well. Students will discover Shakespeare’s hidden clues for performers, they will appreciate how understanding and trusting rhythm can enhance the meaning of the plays and they will learn to speak Shakespeare’s words with confidence.
The course will also look at the infinite conceptual and interpretive possibilities open to a company producing Shakespeare in the 21st century. This is primarily a course for actors but it is open to anyone who would like the opportunity to get inside some of the world’s most famous characters and to deliver lines of timeless significance.
Exploring the practical skills required to perform Shakespeare will equip an actor with the skills to perform anything. This course is designed to challenge and inspire anyone who wants to develop good performance practice.
